Bat House

Our bat houses are designed to meet bat nesting needs as put forth by leading bat experts.

They are stained dark brown to absorb heat to keep bats at a consistently warm temperature of 80-100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The dimensions are 24” tall x 16” wide x ¾ “ deep.

Plastic netting secured to the back of the interior allows bats to have a foothold as they climb up and into their house. Each single chamber bat house is large enough to accommodate a colony of 30-40 Small Brown Bats.

Bat houses should be mounted on a wood, brick, or stone building, especially under the eaves, or on a pole, in a location where they will receive a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, facing east, south or southeast.

Because their guano (an excellent fertilizer) will fall directly down from the bat house, it is prudent to pay attention to what is located beneath it.

Bat houses should be mounted 12-20 feet above the ground, preferably within ¼ mile of a water source, and not in an area lit by bright lights at night.

Ideally, they should be located 25 feet from potential perches for aerial predators, in a region near natural vegetation and varied agricultural land use.

Trees are not recommended sites for bat houses due to the leaves shielding the houses from the sun, the easy accessibility for predators, and branches preventing bats’ swooping flight in and out of the houses.
